Lionel Messi and Inter Miami were held to a goalless draw by Egypt’s Al Ahly on Saturday as FIFA’s new 32-team tournament kicked off smoothly before a crowd of 60,927 fans in Florida.
Messi nearly delivered a dramatic stoppage-time winner, but his trademark curling shot from 20 yards was brilliantly tipped onto the crossbar by Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy as Miami pushed hard in the final moments.
Al Ahly, backed by more than 10,000 of their passionate supporters, had a golden chance in the first half when Egypt international Trezeguet stepped up for a penalty, only to be denied by Miami’s Argentine keeper Oscar Ustari.
