The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is seeking Sh59.3 million to conduct the Emurua Dikirr parliamentary by-election following the death of area MP Johana Nge'no. Acting Chief Executive Officer Moses Sunkuli said the commission has already submitted the funding request to facilitate the mini-poll.
Sunkuli noted that the funds will support key electoral operations required to conduct the by-election, including procurement of election materials, training and payment of polling officials, voter education, logistics and coordination with security agencies.
The parliamentary seat for Emurua Dikirr fell vacant after the death of Johana Nge'no in a helicopter crash on February 28, 2026. His death triggered the constitutional requirement for the electoral body to organize a by-election to fill the vacant seat.
The late lawmaker had served as the Member of Parliament for Emurua Dikirr since 2013 and was re-elected during the 2022 General Election. He was widely known in the constituency for his involvement in development projects and local political affairs.
IEBC officials say preparations for the by-election will begin once the necessary funding is secured. The commission is expected to announce the official election timetable, including the date for voter registration updates, candidate nominations and the polling day.
The electoral body emphasized that the funds will also cater for deployment of election personnel across polling stations within the constituency and the transportation of election materials to remote areas.
Political activity in Emurua Dikirr is expected to intensify as political parties begin identifying candidates to contest the seat. Local leaders and aspirants have already started early consultations ahead of the anticipated by-election.
The upcoming by-election is likely to attract national attention as it will determine who succeeds the late legislator and represents the constituency in the National Assembly for the remainder of the current parliamentary term.
