IEBC Fines Kasipul By-Election Candidates Sh1 Million Each Over Deadly Clashes

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has taken severe action against two Kasipul by-election candidates, Philip Aroko and Boyd Were, fining each of them Sh1 million following deadly clashes and violations of the harmonized campaign schedule.

The electoral body stated that the penalties are a direct and urgent response to the violence that has left the constituency "bleeding."

The IEBC has given the two candidates a strict deadline to pay the fine within 48 hours. Failure to comply could potentially result in further disciplinary measures, including disqualification from the race.

The decision follows a tragic incident on November 6th, where at least two people were killed in clashes between supporters of the two candidates during a political rally held in the Opondo area, Central Kasipul Ward, Homa Bay County.

The clash occurred after Aroko and his supporters allegedly stormed Were’s campaign venue and fired shots into the air, sparking panic and violence. When Were went to report the incident at Oyugis Police Station, his supporters retaliated against Aroko’s team, leading to the fatal hacking of two of Aroko's supporters aged 26.
