Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has claimed he is “not safe” following what he says is the withdrawal of his state security detail, raising fresh political tension and public debate over his safety.

Gachagua made the remarks on Monday, saying the decision to remove his security was reckless given his stature and recent political developments.

“I want to tell the people of Kenya that Rigathi Gachagua is not safe,” he said, insisting that his government-provided protection had been withdrawn without adequate explanation.

He argued that as a former deputy president and a key national political figure, he remains exposed to potential threats that warrant continued state protection.

Gachagua linked the move to his fallout with the current administration, suggesting the withdrawal was politically motivated rather than procedural.

According to him, the decision was intended to intimidate him and weaken his political influence, particularly in the Mt Kenya region.

He accused the government of using state machinery to silence dissenting voices and punish former allies who have fallen out with the leadership.

The former deputy president said he had raised concerns privately but felt compelled to go public after what he described as a growing risk to his personal safety.

“I have a family, supporters, and responsibilities, and this is not something to joke about,” he said.

Gachagua also urged Kenyans to remain vigilant, framing his situation as part of a broader struggle over democracy and political freedom.

His claims come against the backdrop of heightened political activity and sharp rhetoric following his impeachment in late 2024.

Since leaving office, his security arrangements have reportedly been scaled down in line with existing protocols for former state officials.

However, Gachagua maintains that the level of protection removed goes beyond standard procedure and exposes him to danger.

Supporters allied to the former deputy president have echoed his concerns, calling on the government to immediately restore his security.

They argue that withdrawing protection from high-profile leaders could set a dangerous precedent.

So far, there has been no detailed public response from security agencies addressing his specific claims.

The development is expected to intensify political debate in the coming days, with pressure mounting on the government to clarify its position and reassure the public on the safety of former senior officials.
