The Deputy Governor of Homa Bay County, Joseph Oyugi Magwanga, has resigned from office, bringing to an end months of political tension within the county’s top leadership.
Magwanga, who was elected in 2022 alongside Governor Gladys Wanga, announced his decision on Thursday, saying he could no longer effectively discharge his constitutional mandate under the prevailing circumstances.
In his resignation communication, the outgoing deputy governor cited sustained operational challenges that he said had rendered his office dysfunctional, making it difficult to serve residents as required by law.
He indicated that access to his official office had been restricted for months and that facilitation necessary for executing his duties had been withdrawn, significantly limiting his capacity to function.
Magwanga maintained that continuing to remain in office without the ability to deliver services would amount to drawing public resources without corresponding accountability to the electorate.
The resignation follows a prolonged fallout between the county’s top two leaders, a dispute that became more visible during the Kasipul parliamentary by-election, where political alignments deepened divisions within the county administration.
The deputy governor had previously been relieved of additional executive responsibilities in the county cabinet, a move that further strained relations within the county government.
His departure now creates a vacancy that will trigger constitutional processes to fill the position, setting the stage for fresh political realignments within the county assembly and broader county leadership.
Magwanga has since declared interest in contesting the county’s top seat in the 2027 Kenyan General Election, a move that could set up a high-stakes contest and significantly reshape the political landscape in Homa Bay.
