Manchester United and England defender Harry Maguire has been found guilty again in Greece following a retrial that took place at the fifth attempt, concluding a legal saga that began in August 2020. The Greek court convicted him of non‑serious assault, resisting arrest, and attempted bribery over an altercation on the island of Mykonos.
Maguire, 32, was handed a 15‑month suspended prison sentence, reduced from the original 21‑month term. He will not serve time unless he commits another offence during the period of the suspended sentence.
The case stems from a late‑night incident outside a bar in Mykonos where Maguire, his brother Joe, and a friend were arrested following a brawl. Maguire has consistently denied wrongdoing, arguing he and his companions were acting in self‑defence.
His original conviction in 2020 was quashed on appeal, automatically triggering a full retrial. That retrial was postponed four times between 2023 and 2025 due to procedural delays, including untranslated documents and scheduling issues.
At the retrial, the court concluded Maguire was guilty of the lesser offences, reflecting a reassessment of the facts. The length and severity of the sentence were reduced accordingly.
Maguire was not present at the hearing, continuing training with Manchester United. His legal team has already signalled plans to appeal the verdict to the Greek Supreme Court to clear his name.
The suspended sentence may carry a fine, though the financial penalties from the original verdict have reportedly been removed. Maguire has refused offers to settle financially, preferring to contest the charges legally.
The ruling concludes a long‑running legal process that has intermittently overshadowed Maguire’s career for nearly six years. Under Greek law, the case must be concluded by August 2028, when the statute of limitations for the offences expires.
Despite the guilty verdict, Maguire remains part of Manchester United’s squad and is expected to continue playing. He has maintained his innocence throughout and intends to pursue every legal avenue to overturn the ruling.
