Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes has expressed deep disappointment over his team’s performance in the Wear–Tyne derby, admitting the players failed to live up to expectations against Sunderland. The midfielder acknowledged that the display fell well below the standards required in such a high-profile fixture.

Guimaraes said the result and overall performance were embarrassing, particularly given the significance of the derby to supporters. He noted that Newcastle did not show the intensity, organisation or quality expected, allowing Sunderland to impose themselves during key moments of the match.

The Newcastle skipper also pointed out that, on paper, his side possesses superior quality but failed to translate that advantage onto the pitch. According to Guimaraes, the team did not play with the confidence or cohesion that reflects their ability.

He stressed that responsibility lies with the players, admitting they did not execute the game plan effectively. The Brazilian added that derby matches demand more fight, focus and commitment than was shown on the day.

Guimaraes concluded by calling for a strong response, insisting the team must learn from the setback and show character in upcoming matches to restore pride and rebuild confidence among fans.
