Mombasa County has pledged to put up new sporting facilities and renovate the existing ones for further development of sports.
County chief executive in charge of lands Mohammed Hussein said the move is aimed at promoting sporting activities at the grass root level and provide young people a platform to nurture their talents.
Speaking during the launch of a local league dubbed Shahbal Super Cup at Serani grounds in Mvita Sub County, he said the county government will kick off a strategic campaign to repossess all grabbed public utilities including community football grounds.
He added once the grabbed sport facilities are reposed, they will be used for the construction of more sporting facilities and other social amenities.
East Africa Legislative Assembly Member of parliament Suleiman Shahbal who has sponsored the tournament, said he is engaging with Mombasa governor and local leaders to set up a quality football development program to improve the level of football in the county and national level.
The league was curtain raised by a thrilling match between the newly formed Mombasa United FC and the talented Wananyuki FC who played out a draw and Wananyuki ended up winning 5-3 on penalties.
