The government has flagged off the first 400,000 metric tons of subsidized fertilizer, marking the beginning of a large-scale distribution across the country ahead of the long rain season.

This push, spearheaded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, aims to provide farmers with affordable and readily available fertilizer, crucial for achieving desired harvest levels.

Dr. Kiprono Ronoh, Principal Secretary of the State Department of Agriculture, announced plans to procure a total of 7.5 million fertilizer bags for the long rainy season.

Farmers can access these subsidized fertilizers at a reduced price of Sh. 2500 per 50kg bag through various channels. These include agro-dealers, National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depots, and other designated locations established in collaboration with county governments.

This widespread distribution network aims to bring the fertilizer closer to farmers, reducing logistical hurdles and encouraging wider participation.

Dr. Ronoh emphasized the dual benefit of this initiative: boosting farmer morale and strengthening national food security, aligning with the Kenya Kwanza administration's promises. The target is to harvest at least 63 million bags of maize, with fertilizer seen as a key driver of increased yields.

The government has taken steps to ensure quality control, testing the fertilizer to guarantee its effectiveness. This is particularly important considering the acidic nature of Kenyan soil, and the blended fertilizer composition is expected to improve soil health and contribute to bumper harvests.

Furthermore, the Ministry has adopted a "consignment model" for this year's program. This model involves partnering with agro-dealers, allowing them to purchase and distribute fertilizer directly, fostering private sector growth, and creating business opportunities.

The commitment doesn't end with the long rains. Dr. Ronoh announced the distribution of an additional 200,000 metric tons of fertilizer during the short rains season, catering to farmers planting during that period.
