Ghana has announced that it will introduce a landmark immigration reform allowing all African citizens to obtain free electronic visas (e-visas) for travel into the country for tourism and business purposes starting 25 May 2026, coinciding with Africa Day celebrations. The policy was announced by President John Dramani Mahama as part of efforts to deepen African integration and promote regional mobility.

President Mahama said the initiative is aimed at strengthening economic ties across the continent, boosting tourism, and positioning Ghana as a leading destination for African trade and investment under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) framework. He emphasized that the move reflects Ghana’s long-standing Pan-African commitment to easier movement of people across African borders.

According to the government, the policy will eliminate visa application fees for all African passport holders while introducing a streamlined online e-visa system. Applicants will still be required to submit travel documents digitally and undergo standard verification and security screening before approval.

Officials clarified that the system is not a full visa-free entry regime, but rather a cost-free digital visa model, meaning entry approval will still be required prior to travel. The digital platform is expected to modernize Ghana’s immigration processes and reduce administrative bottlenecks.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration said the reform is part of broader efforts to modernize border management systems and improve travel efficiency. It is also expected to enhance Ghana’s competitiveness as a tourism and business hub in West Africa.

Security agencies will continue to conduct background checks through the electronic system to ensure compliance with international travel and security standards. Authorities have stressed that the policy balances openness with national security considerations.

The announcement has been widely interpreted as a significant step toward improving intra-African mobility, in line with African Union goals of free movement of people across the continent. Analysts say it could encourage more regional tourism and cross-border business activities.

Economic experts argue that removing visa fees for Africans could lead to increased arrivals from neighboring countries and strengthen Ghana’s hospitality, aviation, and service sectors, particularly in major cities like Accra and Kumasi.

The policy also positions Ghana among a small group of African countries taking steps toward more liberal visa regimes for African travelers, reflecting a broader continental push toward integration and easier mobility under AfCFTA.

If implemented as planned, the free e-visa system will officially take effect on Africa Day, 25 May 2026, marking what officials describe as a historic milestone in Ghana’s efforts to promote unity and cooperation across the African continent.
