Germany secured qualification for the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 after producing a late comeback to defeat Ivory Coast 2–1 in their second Group E fixture, maintaining their unbeaten start and confirming their place in the knockout stage with a game remaining.
The Europeans entered the contest carrying momentum from their opening victory and were expected to continue their strong run, but Ivory Coast delivered a determined performance that tested Germany throughout the evening.
Ivory Coast took the lead in the 30th minute through captain Franck Kessié, who reacted quickest inside the penalty area to convert after Germany failed to fully clear the danger. The goal rewarded a disciplined and energetic opening half from the African side.
Germany pushed for an immediate response and thought they had found an equaliser before the break, only for their efforts to be denied. Despite dominating possession and creating opportunities, Julian Nagelsmann’s team entered halftime trailing.
The second half brought a more aggressive German approach as tactical adjustments and substitutions increased the pressure on Ivory Coast’s defence. Germany gradually gained control and created a series of dangerous attacking moments.
Their breakthrough finally arrived in the 68th minute when substitute Deniz Undav connected well inside the area to restore parity and shift momentum in Germany’s favour.
With the match appearing headed for a draw, Germany continued to attack in search of a winning goal. Their persistence paid off deep into stoppage time when Undav struck again, producing a composed finish to complete the turnaround and seal all three points.
The victory moved Germany to six points from two matches in Group E, guaranteeing qualification to the Round of 32 and strengthening their status as one of the tournament’s early contenders.
For Ivory Coast, the defeat ended hopes of early qualification but left the team still in contention ahead of the final group-stage fixture, where their knockout ambitions will remain alive.
Germany will now turn attention to their final group match as they seek to maintain momentum before the elimination rounds begin.
