France celebrate scoring against Azerbaijan
France secured a 3-1 victory over Azerbaijan in their World Cup qualifying clash on Sunday night, overturning an early setback to earn all three points in Baku. The hosts stunned the visitors inside the opening minutes when Ramil Dadashov fired home to give Azerbaijan a 1-0 lead after just four minutes.
The French response was swift, with Jean-Philippe Mateta equalising in the 17th minute after connecting with a precise delivery from Malo Gusto. Les Bleus thought they had turned the game around shortly after, but goals by Christopher Nkunku and Khephren Thuram were both ruled out by VAR. France, however, continued to press and eventually took the lead through Mathys Aklouche in the 30th minute.
Azerbaijan’s hopes faded just before halftime when Shahriyar Mahammadaliyev turned the ball into his own net in stoppage time, extending France’s advantage to 3-1. Both sides made several substitutions in the second half, but the scoreline remained unchanged, with France comfortably seeing out the contest.
Malo Gusto was named Player of the Match after a standout performance, registering an assist and playing a key role in France’s attacking momentum. The victory strengthens France’s position in Group D as they continue their push toward securing World Cup qualification.
