Former Premier League referee David Coote has pleaded guilty to creating an indecent image of a child during a court appearance at Nottingham Crown Court. The 43-year-old admitted to making a Category A image, which is considered the most serious classification of child abuse material under UK law.
The offence came to light following an investigation by law enforcement authorities, who recovered the illegal material from his possession. Coote initially pleaded not guilty during an earlier hearing in September 2025 but changed his plea to guilty in Tuesday’s session.
The judge has ordered a pre-sentence report, which will assist in determining whether Coote will face a custodial sentence. He has been granted conditional bail ahead of his sentencing scheduled for December 11, 2025.
Coote had been a top-flight referee in England before his dismissal from the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) in late 2024. His exit followed a series of controversies, including disciplinary action taken by UEFA.
The case has sparked widespread reaction across the football community, with many calling for strict accountability measures for individuals in positions of trust. Sentencing in December will determine the legal consequences for the former referee.
