Njoro Girls High School in Nakuru County has been closed indefinitely following protests by parents and residents after the death of a student.
The decision to send home all Form Three and Form Four students was confirmed by Nakuru County Director of Education, Mulili, who said it was a precautionary measure to ensure order while investigations continue.
Protests erupted outside the school gates, with parents and local residents demanding answers over the circumstances surrounding the student’s death. Police officers were deployed to manage the crowds and maintain peace.
The deceased student has been identified as Brenda Akinyi, an 18-year-old Form Four student who passed away while receiving treatment at Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital after falling ill at school.
Brenda’s family has accused the school of negligence, alleging that she had been sick for several days and was only given painkillers, with the school failing to promptly inform them despite their proximity.
Her brother claimed that he first learned about her illness after she had deteriorated, suggesting that timely medical attention might have prevented her death.
The Nakuru County Director of Education said initial school records indicate Brenda had a history of illness, and emphasized that due process will be followed to establish the facts surrounding her death.
An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of death, and authorities have pledged a thorough investigation to ensure accountability and clarity.
Some parents and residents have raised concerns that the incident highlights broader welfare and safety issues at the school, calling for an independent review of student care and emergency procedures.
