FIFA has officially unveiled a new pre-match ceremony format for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, introducing one of the most visible changes to the tournament experience in decades. The governing body says the redesign is intended to make the pre-kick-off atmosphere more inclusive and immersive for both players and supporters.
Under the new protocol, teams will no longer stand in the traditional two parallel lines during national anthems. Instead, every player selected in the matchday squad — including substitutes — will take part in the ceremony on the pitch.
FIFA confirmed that both squads will gather around the centre circle during team presentations and the national anthem sequence. The format is designed to ensure that all selected players, not only the starting eleven, share what FIFA describes as a defining World Cup moment.
The ceremony will also introduce large country flag banners spread across the field to represent each nation before kick-off. FIFA says these visual elements are intended to transform the stadium into a shared stage for supporters regardless of where they are seated.
Players will enter the field through dedicated entry arches positioned near the tunnel before moving into ceremony positions. Handheld flags and central pitch branding will also become part of the presentation.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the objective is to continue evolving how football is experienced while creating a stronger sense of unity, pride and emotion during the anthem moment.
According to FIFA, the revised structure is built around a “360-degree” concept aimed at engaging supporters throughout the entire venue rather than focusing presentation toward a single section of the stadium.
The organisation also confirmed that traditional football procedures will remain unchanged after the anthem ceremony. Team handshakes, official photographs and the captains’ coin toss will still take place before kick-off.
Additional visual effects are expected later in the competition, with FIFA indicating that selected matches may feature expanded presentation elements as the tournament progresses.
The updated ceremony arrives alongside the expanded 2026 World Cup format, which will feature 48 national teams and 104 matches — the largest edition of the tournament in history.
FIFA says the changes are intended to ensure that the World Cup experience reflects the expanded scale of the competition while giving recognition to every player named on a matchday roster.
The ceremony is scheduled to make its debut at the tournament’s opening match and will become the standard presentation across the competition.
The announcement confirms that the long-standing image of two teams standing side by side for the anthems is set to give way to a broader, full-squad ceremony centred on visibility, participation and stadium spectacle.
