Eight people have died after a U.S. Air Force B-52 Stratofortress crashed moments after takeoff from Edwards Air Force Base in Southern California during what military officials described as a routine test mission. The aircraft reportedly went down shortly after departure, with authorities confirming there were no survivors.

The bomber had been operating as part of a scheduled flight linked to ongoing modernization and testing efforts within the U.S. Air Force fleet. Edwards Air Force Base is widely used for advanced aviation testing and evaluation missions involving military aircraft and emerging defence systems.

Officials said those on board included Air Force personnel, government civilians and contractors participating in the mission. Authorities did not immediately release identities as family notification procedures continued.

Emergency response units were deployed immediately after the crash and secured the impact area inside the military installation. Images from the scene showed smoke rising from a section of desert terrain as recovery teams moved in.

Operations at the base were temporarily disrupted as emergency and investigative personnel took control of the site. Airfield activity was adjusted while teams focused on recovery efforts and preservation of evidence.

Military leadership described the incident as a major loss for the bomber and flight-testing community. Condolence messages were issued to affected families and colleagues involved in the programme.

The B-52 remains one of the longest-serving aircraft in military aviation history, having stayed in active service through decades of upgrades designed to extend its operational lifespan and maintain strategic capability.

Investigators have not announced a cause of the crash and warned against speculation while formal accident inquiries begin. Teams are expected to review flight records, maintenance history, onboard systems and operational conditions before releasing preliminary findings.
