The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has launched a major operation targeting senior officials at the State Department for Sports over allegations of embezzling Ksh3.8 billion in public funds. The raids were conducted simultaneously in Nairobi, Kiambu, Machakos, Nyeri, and Nanyuki counties, where detectives searched homes and offices of government officers and their associates suspected of involvement in the graft scheme.
According to the EACC, the investigation focuses on the unlawful acquisition of public property, abuse of office, and economic crimes allegedly committed between the 2020/2021 and 2025/2026 financial years. The commission said the funds in question were linked to inflated and fictitious procurement contracts within the department, where senior officials are accused of colluding with private suppliers to siphon millions meant for sports programs.
During the operation, EACC officers reportedly recovered Ksh3.58 million in cash, several title deeds, high-end vehicles, and financial documents believed to be linked to the suspected irregular transactions. The suspects, including senior accountants and procurement officers, were escorted to EACC regional offices for interrogation as part of the ongoing probe into the alleged embezzlement.
EACC Chief Executive Officer Mr Abdi Ahmed Mohamoud said the commission is determined to recover all public funds lost through corruption and ensure those involved face prosecution. He added that once investigations are concluded, the findings will guide asset recovery proceedings and possible criminal charges against the implicated officials and their business partners.
