Senegal goalkeeper Yehvan Diouf has dismissed the controversy surrounding the towel incident during Senegal’s heated encounter with Morocco, describing the episode as overblown and misunderstood.
The incident occurred amid a tense, rain-affected match that drew widespread attention not only for the football on display but also for scenes on the touchline involving goalkeeping equipment.
Throughout the game, towels placed near the Senegal goal became a point of friction, with repeated attempts by stadium staff and ball attendants to remove them, prompting visible frustration from the Senegal bench.
Speaking after the match, Diouf offered a calm and measured explanation, stressing that the towels had no hidden meaning or tactical trick behind their use.
"For me, they were just towels—nothing more—used to dry my gloves or my face. Perhaps the matter took on more of a 'folklore' character than it deserved, but to me, there was nothing special about it.
I was just as surprised as you when I saw them trying to take them. We’ve seen this before with Nigeria: when the goalkeeper puts down his towels, stadium staff come to take them, and I don’t know why they do that. Honestly, it was not appropriate behavior on their part.
As for me, I tried to handle the situation calmly and under the best possible conditions, because we needed [Edouard] Mendy and the players to remain 100% focused on the pitch. That is why I acted the way I did."
Diouf’s remarks appear aimed at defusing speculation that had circulated widely on social media, where the towels were portrayed as symbolic or strategic tools.
Video footage from the match showed moments of confrontation on the sideline, adding to the sense of chaos in an already emotionally charged contest.
Observers noted that similar incidents have occurred in previous AFCON matches, raising questions about matchday management and the role of stadium staff during high-pressure fixtures.
Despite the distraction, Senegal’s players maintained their composure on the field, with Edouard Mendy remaining focused between the posts under difficult conditions.
Team officials later praised Diouf for keeping emotions in check and prioritizing concentration at a critical stage of the game.
The episode has since sparked broader debate about fair play, crowd control, and the need for clearer protocols regarding equipment placed near the pitch.
For Diouf, however, the matter remains simple, insisting the focus should stay on football rather than peripheral drama.
As AFCON continues to deliver intense rivalries and high-stakes moments, the towel incident stands as another reminder of how small details can quickly become major talking points on the continental stage.
