Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service, Eliud K. Lagat, has stepped aside from office amid ongoing investigations into the death of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody earlier this month.

In an official statement issued Monday, Lagat said the decision was made in good and conscious thought of his role and responsibilities in the wake of the "unfortunate incident." The announcement comes just days after public outcry over the circumstances surrounding Ojwang's arrest and subsequent death.

Ojwang, who was based in Homa Bay, was reportedly arrested on June 8 following a complaint lodged by DIG Lagat over a social media post allegedly defaming the senior police official. He died while in custody, raising questions about possible abuse of power and police misconduct.

“I have today opted to step aside from the office of the Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service pending completion of investigations,” Lagat stated in the letter. Lagat concluded his statement by pledging full cooperation with the investigation and offering condolences to Ojwang’s family.

“I undertake to provide any support that may be required of me during the investigations of the unfortunate incident. I offer immense condolences to the family of Mr. Albert Ojwang for their great loss,” the letter reads.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is expected to lead the probe into the custodial death, as human rights groups demand swift accountability.
