Deadly Cyclone Chido Wreaks Havoc in Mozambique and Mayotte
Cyclone Chido has caused widespread devastation in Mozambique and Mayotte, leaving a trail of destruction and loss of life, according to the National Institute of Risk and Disaster Management.
In Mozambique, the storm claimed the lives of at least 34 people and injured over 300 others. Thousands of homes and fishing boats were destroyed, affecting more than 175,000 people.
The storm first struck the country on Sunday, where 28 people were killed in the province of Cabo Delgado.
In the province of Nampula, three more people perished, while three more perished farther inland in Niassa, it said.
Meanwhile, the French island of Mayotte has also suffered severe damage from the cyclone. Authorities have imposed a curfew to prevent looting as rescue efforts continue.
The official death toll in Mayotte is currently 21, but officials fear the number could rise significantly. The scale of the destruction has been compared to a nuclear war.
