The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has recovered 200 suspected stolen mobile phones during an intelligence-led operation in Viken Thirty Village in Kasarani, Nairobi, in a major breakthrough against mobile phone theft syndicates. The operation was carried out by detectives from Kasarani Police Station following information about a suspected store used to conceal stolen electronic devices.

During the raid, detectives recovered 120 mobile phones that were still intact and another 80 that had already been dismantled. Investigators believe the dismantled devices were being stripped for spare parts before being sold through illegal channels, while the intact phones were likely awaiting resale.

Crime Scene Investigation officers processed the scene and collected forensic evidence before the recovered devices were transported to the National Police Service Forensic Laboratory. Detectives attached to the Cybercrime and Digital Forensics Unit are expected to analyse the phones to establish ownership, recover digital evidence and support ongoing investigations.

The DCI said the forensic examination will help trace the rightful owners of the recovered devices and identify individuals linked to the suspected theft network. Investigators are also working to determine whether the phones were stolen within Nairobi or brought into the city from other parts of the country.

No arrests had been announced immediately after the operation, but detectives said investigations are continuing and several intelligence leads are being pursued. Authorities believe the recovery could lead to the dismantling of a wider criminal syndicate involved in the theft, refurbishment and illegal sale of mobile phones.

The recovery comes amid increased police operations targeting organised mobile phone theft syndicates across Nairobi. Law enforcement agencies have expressed concern over the growing market for stolen mobile phones and spare parts, which continues to fuel street robberies and phone-snatching incidents.

The DCI has urged members of the public to keep records of their mobile phone IMEI numbers and report theft cases promptly to the nearest police station. The agency noted that timely reporting improves the chances of tracing stolen devices through forensic analysis and returning them to their rightful owners.

Detectives have reaffirmed their commitment to disrupting criminal networks dealing in stolen electronic devices, saying intelligence-led operations will continue in identified hotspots as part of broader efforts to curb technology-related crime and protect members of the public.
