Chelsea striker Liam Delap is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring injury against Fulham on August 30. The 21-year-old will not require surgery, but the recovery process is expected to keep him out for around 10 weeks, pushing his return to training back until November.
The setback initially appeared less serious, with early estimates suggesting a six-to-eight-week absence. However, further medical assessment has confirmed that the forward will need additional time before resuming full fitness. While no surgical procedure is necessary, Delap will undergo an extensive rehabilitation program at Cobham.
The injury has already forced Chelsea into a transfer U-turn. Nicolas Jackson, who was close to finalising a loan switch to Bayern Munich, saw his move collapse as the Blues decided to retain him following Delap’s setback. The club is also considering additional striker options, including recalling Marc Guiu from his Sunderland loan.
Manager Enzo Maresca will now have to adjust his attacking plans in the absence of Delap, who had started the season brightly. With fixtures coming thick and fast, Chelsea will rely on Jackson and other available options to lead the line until their summer signing returns.
Delap’s comeback is targeted for November, though Chelsea are expected to take a cautious approach to avoid any recurrence. His return will provide a significant boost for the squad heading into the crucial winter schedule.
