Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior has confirmed that midfielder Enzo Fernández will miss the club’s next two matches following a disciplinary decision taken internally at the club.

The Blues boss revealed that the Argentina international will not be available for the upcoming fixture, as well as the high-profile clash against Manchester City next weekend, stressing that the decision was rooted in maintaining standards within the squad.

“As a football club, with me as part of the decision, he won't be available for tomorrow's game or Man City next Sunday,” Rosenior said, confirming the immediate impact of the sanction on team selection.

Rosenior made it clear that the situation goes beyond footballing matters, pointing to a breach of internal expectations and culture within the dressing room. “A line was crossed in terms of our culture and what we want to build,” he added.

The decision comes after recent comments by Fernández regarding his future, which were deemed inappropriate by the club hierarchy and coaching staff, prompting swift disciplinary action.

With Fernández sidelined, attention has turned to leadership within the squad, particularly regarding who will step into a more prominent role in his absence as vice-captain responsibilities are reassessed.

Rosenior outlined a number of senior figures who could take on added leadership duties, naming Moisés Caicedo, Tosin Adarabioyo, Cole Palmer, João Pedro and Marc Cucurella as potential options.

“Moi Caicedo, Tosin, Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro, Marc Cucurella — we have leaders. I’ll make the decision later today,” Rosenior said, indicating that the final call on leadership will be made closer to kickoff.

The development has sparked debate among fans and pundits, with some questioning the severity of the punishment, while others have backed the manager’s firm stance on discipline and unity.

Fernández’s absence could prove significant for Chelsea as they navigate a crucial stage of the season, particularly with a difficult fixture against Manchester City looming.

The situation also raises fresh uncertainty about the midfielder’s long-term future at Stamford Bridge, with the club keen to reinforce a culture of commitment and focus amid growing external speculation.

Enzo Fernandez agent Javier Pastore says BAN is UNFAIR! “Enzo didn’t understand the situation. When the coach told him, he accepted it because he’s a highly professional guy who’s always fully committed wherever he is and respects decisions, but we don’t understand the punishment because he doesn’t mention any club or say he wants to leave Chelsea”

“FAR from it, he only mentions Madrid, the city, because he was asked which European city he’d like to live in one day, and he said Madrid because of the language, because it’s similar to Buenos Aires and because it’s logical – it’s only natural for an Argentine to say that, and also because of the culture, the weather, But at no point does he say he wants to leave Chelsea or London” (MarioCortegana)
