Chelsea and West Ham United have both been charged by the Football Association following a mass altercation that broke out in the closing stages of their Premier League match at Stamford Bridge. The incident occurred late in the game after Chelsea completed a dramatic comeback victory, with players from both sides involved in heated scenes on the pitch.
The FA alleges that Chelsea failed to ensure their players did not behave in an improper and provocative manner during the confrontation. West Ham face a more serious accusation, with the governing body claiming the club failed to control its players, who were involved in improper, provocative and violent conduct.
Tensions flared shortly after Chelsea scored a late winning goal to overturn a two-goal deficit. Celebrations quickly turned sour as pushing and shoving spread among several players, forcing match officials and staff to intervene to restore order.
The flashpoint of the altercation is reported to have involved a challenge and subsequent push that escalated into a wider melee. West Ham defender Jean-Clair Todibo was sent off for violent conduct after being involved in the incident.
The FA charges fall under disciplinary rules that make clubs responsible for the behaviour of their players during matches, regardless of whether individual red cards or sanctions are issued by referees at the time.
Todibo is expected to face a multi-match suspension as a result of his dismissal, while the FA continues its disciplinary process against both clubs.
Chelsea and West Ham have been given a deadline to respond to the charges before the matter is referred to an independent regulatory commission.
Potential sanctions could include fines or warnings, depending on the FA’s assessment of the incident and each club’s disciplinary record.
