Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet stormed to victory in the women’s 10,000 metres at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, delivering the country’s first gold medal of the competition. Chebet, who famously completed the 5,000m and 10,000m double at the 2024 Paris Olympics, once again underlined her dominance on the track with a commanding performance.
The 24-year-old produced a blistering final lap, surging ahead in the home straight to clock 30 minutes 37.61 seconds. Her powerful finish proved too much for Italy’s Nadia Battocletti, who claimed silver in a new national record of 30:38.23, while Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay settled for bronze.
The race had been tightly contested, with a lead pack of experienced runners keeping the pace high through the final kilometres. Chebet, however, timed her move to perfection, holding back until the decisive moment before unleashing her trademark finishing kick that has made her one of the most feared distance runners in the world.
This triumph marks Chebet’s first world title and adds to her growing legacy as one of Kenya’s brightest athletics stars. Her victory also provided a much-needed boost for Team Kenya, who will be looking to build momentum as the championships progress in Tokyo.
