Cancelo Strikes Late As Portugal Edge Hungary In World Cup Qualifier

Portugal secured a dramatic 3–2 victory over Hungary in Budapest on Tuesday night, keeping their perfect start to the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign intact.
The hosts stunned Roberto Martínez’s side when Barnabás Varga opened the scoring in the 21st minute, but Bernardo Silva levelled before half-time. Cristiano Ronaldo then converted a penalty shortly after the break, equalling the all-time record for goals in World Cup qualifiers with his 39th strike.
Hungary, who had defended resolutely while threatening on the counter, hit back in the 84th minute through Varga once again, punishing Portugal’s defensive lapse. But the visitors responded immediately as João Cancelo fired home just two minutes later to seal the win.
Despite enjoying nearly 70% possession and creating 15 shots, Portugal struggled to turn dominance into clear-cut chances, recording just over one expected goal. Hungary, with only two efforts on target, were ruthlessly efficient and exposed Portugal’s vulnerability in transition and set-piece situations.
The result leaves Portugal on six points from two matches and top of Group F. However, Martínez will be aware that improvements are needed in the final third and in defensive concentration if his team are to convert control into comfortable victories in the long qualifying road ahead.
