CAF Reschedules the Dates of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup (“WAFCON”) 2026, to 25 July – 16 August 2026
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has postponed the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) that had initially been scheduled to begin in March in Morocco. The continental football governing body said the decision was made after consultations with key stakeholders and partners.
CAF confirmed that the tournament, which had been planned to run from March 17 to April 3, 2026, will now be played from July 25 to August 16, 2026. The change gives organisers more time to finalise preparations for the continental competition.
The football body said the postponement was caused by unforeseen circumstances affecting the tournament’s scheduling and organisation. CAF did not disclose the exact issues but said the decision was taken to ensure the smooth running and success of the competition.
Morocco will still host the tournament despite the change in dates. Matches are expected to be staged in several major cities including Rabat, Casablanca and Fez using some of the country’s largest stadiums.
The 2026 edition will be the 16th staging of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. It is Africa’s premier women’s football tournament and is organised by the Confederation of African Football.
Morocco will become the first country to host the tournament three consecutive times after previously staging the 2022 and 2024 editions. The North African nation has invested heavily in infrastructure and women’s football development in recent years.
The upcoming tournament will also feature an expanded format with 16 teams competing for the continental title. The expansion is expected to boost participation and competitiveness among African national teams.
WAFCON 2026 will also serve as part of the qualification pathway for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Teams that reach the latter stages of the tournament will secure direct qualification or playoff opportunities for the global competition.
Nigeria will enter the tournament as defending champions after winning the previous edition. The Super Falcons remain the most successful team in the history of the competition.
CAF said preparations for the rescheduled tournament are continuing, expressing confidence that the competition will be successfully held when it takes place between July 25 and August 16, 2026.
