President William Ruto has awarded a full university charter to Bomet University College, elevating the institution to a fully fledged public university and marking a major milestone for higher education in Bomet County and the wider South Rift region.
With the conferment of the charter, Bomet University College ceases to operate as a constituent college of Moi University and gains full academic, administrative and financial autonomy. The new status allows the institution to award degrees in its own name and independently manage its affairs.
The chartered institution now becomes the 36th public university in Kenya, reflecting the government’s continued expansion of access to university education across the country. The move is in line with national efforts to decentralise higher education and promote regional development.
Bomet University College was established in 2017 under Moi University to increase access to higher education in the county and neighbouring regions. Since its inception, the institution has recorded steady growth in student enrolment, academic programmes and physical infrastructure.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the upgrade, noting that the charter will enable the university to broaden its academic offerings, strengthen research and innovation, and attract more partnerships and funding opportunities.
Local leaders described the charter as a transformative step for Bomet County, saying it will boost the local economy through job creation, increased student population and enhanced demand for services around the institution.
The elevation of Bomet University College to a chartered public university underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening the education sector as a key pillar for skills development, economic growth and national transformation.
