Alarm is mounting across the country following the reported abduction of two prominent activists, Nicholas Oyoo and Bob Njagi, who vanished in Kampala, Uganda, five days ago.
The duo, who are key figures in the Free Kenya Movement (Njagi is the Chair and Oyoo the Secretary General), were allegedly seized on Wednesday afternoon by heavily armed men, believed to be Ugandan security operatives, from a petrol station in the Kireka area of Kampala.
According to eyewitnesses, they were forcibly bundled into a van and driven to an undisclosed location, with their mobile phones immediately switched off.
The activists had traveled to Uganda earlier in the week to show solidarity and join the campaign trail of opposition presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine. Videos show Njagi on stage alongside the opposition leader just a day before the abduction.
Their disappearance has triggered an immediate diplomatic response. The Kenyan High Commission in Kampala has formally requested Ugandan authorities to urgently investigate the matter and establish the whereabouts of Njagi and Oyoo, assuring that efforts are underway to secure their release and safe return.
Meanwhile, human rights groups, including the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and Amnesty International Kenya, have strongly condemned the incident as part of a disturbing pattern of "transborder repression" targeting activists across East Africa.
Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine has also denounced the abduction, suggesting the pair were targeted for their association with his movement.
