Bishop Sapit Backs US Aid Reduction, Challenges African Leadership

The Head Bishop of the Anglican Church (ACK) in Kenya, Jackson Ole Sapit, has said that the church supports the US move to remove aid from the country.
Bishop Sapit says African leaders should wake up and take responsibility for addressing the important issues of their countries.
Speaking at St Pauls University Limuru during the launch of the Institute of Women's Studies and Research, the first of its kind in Africa, Sapit called on African leaders to stop relying on foreign aid and instead look for ways to be self-reliant.
He said that aid from abroad often comes with conditions that can affect the country's independence.
He added that African leaders should invest in important areas such as education, health and infrastructure to improve the lives of their people.
His remarks follow Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s directive on Jan. 24, where the State Department personnel were instructed to stop nearly all U.S. foreign aid spending for 90 days in response to an executive order that President Donald Trump signed after his inauguration.
However, a waiver was issued on PEPFAR and other “life-saving humanitarian assistance” programs to continue operating after bowing to pressure.
