Barcelona and Villarreal are set to make history as they plan to stage their December LaLiga clash in Miami, while Serie A sides AC Milan and Como are lining up a fixture in Perth, Australia, next February.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation has approved the proposal for the LaLiga Matchday 17 encounter between Villarreal and Barcelona to be played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on December 20, pending final authorization from UEFA and FIFA. LaLiga president Javier Tebas expressed confidence in the move, despite opposition from Real Madrid and Spain’s players’ union, who argue it undermines home-and-away fairness.
In Italy, the football federation has sanctioned AC Milan’s request to play their February 7–8 match against Como in Perth, citing San Siro’s unavailability during the Winter Olympics opening ceremony. The match still requires approvals from UEFA, FIFA, and football authorities in Australia.
UEFA has reluctantly granted both games an exceptional one-off approval, stressing that the decision does not set a precedent for domestic league fixtures to be held outside their home countries.
