United States striker Folarin Balogun has been cleared to feature in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash against Belgium after FIFA suspended the enforcement of his one-match ban following a red card in the previous round.
Balogun was sent off during the United States’ 2–0 Round of 32 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina after stepping on defender Tarik Muharemović. The incident led to an immediate dismissal following a VAR review.
Under standard FIFA disciplinary rules, a straight red card results in an automatic one-match suspension. This initially meant Balogun would miss the Belgium fixture.
FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee later reviewed the incident and opted to suspend the application of the ban, allowing the striker to remain eligible for selection.
The governing body did not overturn the red card itself, meaning the booking remains on Balogun’s official disciplinary record.
Instead, the suspension has been placed under a probationary framework, meaning any similar offence within the monitoring period could trigger enforcement of the original ban.
The decision has been interpreted as a procedural disciplinary adjustment rather than a full exoneration of the challenge.
Balogun has been one of the United States’ key attacking players in the tournament, contributing goals during the group and knockout stages.
His availability is a major boost for the United States ahead of a high-stakes encounter with Belgium, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
