AUTISM: DELAY IS NOT A DISEASE IT’S A SKILL
Come 2nd April we will be celebrating more than one amongst many and of course maybe your neighbor, friend, relatives or your students; Should we speak of Charles Darwin who was a scientist of ages, Daryl Hannah an actor who took part in the Movie named Splash, Emily Dickinson one of the most renowned poet, Bobby Fischer the Chess master, Isaac Newton and Elon Musk the Entrepreneur and a blessing in this millennial age.
Have you watched the series called “the good doctor” or do you know of Albert Einstein? While growing up you will agree with me that the very best students were interactive while the best performers would not interact as much.
I guess you know the disorder mentioned above. Autism, or autism spectrum disorder, refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech, and nonverbal communication.
Autism can usually be discovered in children between the age of 2 – 3 years of age.
Because autism is a spectrum disorder, each person with autism has a distinct set of strengths and challenges. The ways in which people with autism learn, think and problem-solve can range from highly skilled to severely challenged. Some people with ASD may require significant support in their daily lives, while others may need less support and, in some cases, live entirely independently.
While not everyone with ASD has the same symptoms, some main symptoms of ASD, according to Carolina Wellness Psychiatry in Chapel Hill, N.C., are:
- Making inconsistent eye contact
- Having difficulty with back-and-forth conversation
- Becoming upset by slight changes in a routine
- Being more or less sensitive than others to sensory input such as light, noise, and clothing textures
- Being able to learn and remember things in great detail. In the community today, as parents rise above noticing some of these symptoms, one can prevent having a child with an autistic disorder, one can increase the odds of having a healthy baby by doing some little life changes.
- Avoiding alcohol, especially during pregnancy
- Eating healthy and Workouts to ensure that the baby is already involved in vigorous activities.
Growing up, there was always that one student that could not explain or answer questions promptly when asked, and would even take longer when shocked. The delay made them victims of teachers' canning and punishment. Should one be punished for delay or be isolated because they have slow movement, or be neglected because of their abnormal repetitive behavior?
Now you know and am sure you are thinking of that one person to celebrate their day. Inclusion will do the trick!
