At least 16 people have been killed in renewed Israeli airstrikes across southern Lebanon, according to Lebanese authorities, less than 24 hours after a ceasefire intended to halt hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah was announced.
Lebanon’s state news agency reported that Israeli warplanes, drones and artillery carried out attacks on more than a dozen locations in the south of the country, including areas near Nabatieh. Emergency teams were deployed to affected areas as rescue and recovery operations continued.
Health officials said dozens of other people sustained injuries in the strikes, with casualty figures expected to change as authorities continue assessments on the ground. Among those reported killed was at least one member of the Lebanese armed forces.
The latest escalation came shortly after renewed diplomatic efforts sought to restore calm along the Israel–Lebanon border following days of intense exchanges between Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters.
The Israeli military said its operations targeted Hezbollah infrastructure and military positions, arguing that the action was a response to what it described as repeated ceasefire violations and projectile launches from Lebanese territory.
Hezbollah rejected Israel’s account and accused Israeli forces of breaching the ceasefire first. The group maintained that Israeli military activity in southern Lebanon had triggered renewed confrontations.
The exchange marks another setback for efforts to stabilise the border region, which has experienced repeated cycles of violence over recent months despite multiple attempts to secure temporary pauses in fighting.
Earlier in the week, cross-border hostilities intensified following attacks that resulted in casualties on both sides, increasing international pressure for restraint and renewed dialogue.
Diplomatic actors involved in regional mediation have expressed concern that continued violations could undermine broader efforts aimed at reducing tensions across the Middle East.
Southern Lebanon has endured extensive damage and repeated displacement during the conflict, with local communities continuing to face humanitarian and economic strain.
As investigations into the latest strikes continue, attention is expected to shift toward whether the ceasefire framework can survive renewed military activity and prevent further escalation in the days ahead.
