Arsenal Plan Emirates Stadium Expansion That Could Lead To Wembley Move

Arsenal are working on plans to expand the Emirates Stadium, with proposals that could see its capacity rise from 60,700 to more than 70,000. The project aims to accommodate the club’s growing fanbase and lengthy season ticket waiting list, which currently exceeds 100,000 supporters. Detailed architectural work is said to be underway to assess the feasibility of increasing seating while maintaining the venue’s existing footprint in North London.

The potential redevelopment would focus mainly on internal changes to the stadium, such as adjusting the gradient of stands, reconfiguring seating layouts, and optimising the bowl design. The exterior of the Emirates is expected to remain largely unchanged, but the upgrades could require extensive structural modifications and modernisation of facilities. Early cost estimates suggest the project could reach several hundred million pounds.

Because of the scale of the planned work, Arsenal may need to relocate their home fixtures temporarily, with Wembley Stadium emerging as the most likely alternative venue. The national stadium previously hosted Tottenham Hotspur and other clubs during stadium redevelopments, making it a proven option for large-scale operations. Such a move would ensure minimal disruption to Arsenal’s domestic and European commitments.

No formal planning application or timeline has been confirmed, but discussions are reportedly at an advanced stage. The club is also expected to consult with Islington Council and local transport authorities, as the expansion would impact crowd management and infrastructure. If approved, the redevelopment would make the Emirates the largest football stadium in London, surpassing Tottenham Hotspur Stadium’s 62,850 capacity.
