Arsenal were forced to settle for a 1–1 draw against Atlético Madrid in a tense UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg played at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid on Tuesday night.

The highly anticipated clash lived up to expectations, with both sides producing a fiercely competitive display marked by tactical discipline, physical duels, and moments of controversy that could prove decisive in the tie.

Arsenal took the lead late in the first half through Viktor Gyökeres, who calmly converted from the penalty spot after being brought down inside the box following a swift attacking move.

The goal came after sustained pressure from the visitors, who looked sharper in the opening period and consistently threatened Atlético’s defensive line with quick transitions and fluid movement in the final third.

Despite falling behind, Atlético Madrid responded strongly after the break, pushing forward with greater urgency and testing Arsenal’s backline with a series of dangerous attacks.

Their persistence paid off midway through the second half when Julián Álvarez equalised from the penalty spot after a handball by defender Ben White, a decision confirmed following a VAR review.

The match saw significant involvement from VAR officials, including a controversial moment late in the game when Arsenal were denied what appeared to be a second penalty, sparking protests from players and the bench.

Atlético grew into the game as the second half progressed, with the home side enjoying longer spells of possession and coming close to taking the lead, including a powerful effort that rattled the crossbar.

Arsenal, however, remained dangerous on the counterattack and created late chances of their own, but were unable to find a decisive second goal that would have given them a crucial away advantage.

The result leaves the semi-final finely poised ahead of the second leg in London, with both teams knowing that a single moment of brilliance—or error—could determine who advances to the final.

Managers from both sides acknowledged the tight nature of the contest, with Arsenal likely to take confidence from their away performance, while Atlético will feel encouraged by their strong second-half response.
