Max Dowman becomes the youngest player ever to score in the EPL at 16 years and 73 days
Arsenal F.C. boosted their push for the Premier League title after securing a 2–0 victory over Everton F.C. at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
The match remained tightly contested for much of the game as Everton produced a disciplined defensive display, frustrating Arsenal despite the home side dominating possession and creating several chances.
Everton nearly stunned the hosts when winger Dwight McNeil came close with a dangerous effort that struck the post, while Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori made a crucial intervention earlier in the match to prevent a clear scoring opportunity.
Arsenal finally broke the deadlock late in the contest when striker Viktor Gyökeres found the back of the net in the 89th minute after sustained attacking pressure from the home side.
The Gunners sealed the victory deep into stoppage time when teenage substitute Max Dowman capitalised on a counterattack and scored into an empty net after Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford had moved forward for a late corner.
Dowman’s strike also marked a historic moment as the youngster became the youngest goalscorer in Arsenal’s Premier League history, capping an impressive cameo performance.
Arsenal controlled much of the match, finishing with the majority of possession and a significantly higher number of shots compared to Everton, reflecting their dominance throughout the contest.
The victory strengthens Arsenal’s grip at the top of the table and increases pressure on rivals such as Manchester City F.C. in the race for the Premier League title as the season approaches its decisive final weeks.
Calafiori On the win vs Everton: "Yeah I think atmosphere was unbelievable and it was a crucial match and we keep going on this [run].
Calafiori On his block against Everton: "I think so far yeah, it is the best one. I think it was so important for the result and for the team. I didn't think about it too much, I look at the guy who was shooting. We love to defend, our house, our goal."
Calafiori On the clean sheet: "Yeah it is so important, when we get clean sheets most of the time we win the game, so it is so key."
Calafiori On the togetherness in the group: "It's not always the case but it is always the case when you have something important. We love to chat in the dressing room. We love to help each other. Can we go aggressive on the pitch, or be more chill, to help the team at the end."
Calafiori On Dowman: "The first time that you see him on the pitch you are quite curious but at the same time you are so mature. He's a talent, you can see. But at the same time we have to leave him quiet and try not to speak about him too much."
Calafiori On his playstyle: "I think it's something that I feel free on the pitch, I try to be somewhere on the pitch where they can find me. He doesn't say to me specifically where to go but he gives me a freedom"
Calafiori On trusting his body due to injuries: "Yeah I always trust in my body. Last season I was really unlucky. Both MCLs in a strange way. It didn't help me. But this season until December I was amazing. Injuries are part of our work. We try always our best.
Anyway, as I said, this season we have made a huge step in terms of the depth of the squad.".
