Araujo Takes Indefinite Mental Health Break From Barcelona

Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo has requested an indefinite leave of absence from the club to focus on recovering mentally and psychologically after weeks of intense pressure. The decision comes shortly after the centre-back endured a difficult run of performances, culminating in a red card during Barcelona’s 3–0 Champions League defeat to Chelsea, an incident widely reported as the breaking point in his recent struggles.
According to reports from Spain, Araujo informed club officials that although he is physically fit, he has not felt mentally settled for several weeks. He is said to believe that stepping away temporarily is the best option not only for his well-being but also for the team’s stability. His representatives held discussions with sporting director Deco, who, alongside other senior figures, acknowledged the seriousness of the defender’s request.
Barcelona responded immediately and granted the 26-year-old time off without setting any return date. Club sources indicated that mental health cases cannot be tied to specific timelines, and the priority is ensuring the player regains clarity and stability before rejoining the squad. The club also emphasised that the situation is private and asked for sensitivity as Araujo undergoes this period of recovery.
All available internal resources have reportedly been mobilised to support Araujo during his break, including professional psychological support should he choose to utilise it. Head coach Hansi Flick, club president Joan Laporta and senior members of the staff are said to have expressed full backing, assuring him that his long-term well-being is more important than any immediate sporting concerns.
Araujo has already missed Barcelona’s recent league match and will remain unavailable for upcoming fixtures, including the clash against Atlético Madrid. While his absence presents a significant challenge to Barcelona’s defensive structure, the club insists that his health comes first. For now, the situation remains open-ended, with the player expected to return only when he feels mentally prepared to compete at the highest level again.
