Abiy Ahmed’s Prosperity Party Sweeps Ethiopia Election With Overwhelming Parliamentary Majority

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has secured a commanding political victory after his ruling Prosperity Party won 438 out of 486 parliamentary seats in the country’s June 1 general election, according to official results announced by the National Election Board of Ethiopia.
The result gives the Prosperity Party a dominant majority in Ethiopia’s House of Peoples’ Representatives and clears the path for Abiy to remain prime minister for another five-year term once the new parliament convenes. Under Ethiopia’s parliamentary system, citizens elect lawmakers who then determine the country’s head of government.
The election drew participation from more than 50 million registered voters, with election officials reporting strong turnout nationwide. Authorities described the process as orderly in most regions despite logistical and security challenges in several parts of the country.
However, the vote did not take place uniformly across Ethiopia. Elections were not held in the Tigray Region due to continuing political and administrative challenges following years of conflict. Some polling stations in parts of Amhara Region and Oromia Region were also unable to open because of insecurity.
The election comes at a significant moment for Ethiopia as the country continues managing economic pressures, reconstruction efforts and regional tensions. Government officials campaigned heavily on economic reforms, food production, infrastructure expansion and efforts to improve national stability.
Prosperity Party was established in 2019 after Abiy dissolved Ethiopia’s former coalition-based ruling structure and created a unified national party. Since then, the party has maintained a strong parliamentary position while overseeing major political and economic changes across the country.
Opposition groups and election observers raised concerns during the campaign period, arguing that political competition remained uneven and that some opposition activities faced restrictions. Ethiopian authorities rejected those claims and maintained that the election process reflected the will of voters.
Abiy first assumed office in 2018 amid widespread calls for political reform and later gained international recognition for efforts that contributed to peace negotiations with neighboring Eritrea. His administration has since faced increasing pressure linked to internal conflicts and governance challenges.
With the election concluded and parliamentary numbers firmly in favor of Prosperity Party, attention now shifts to formation of the next government and how Abiy’s administration will address Ethiopia’s economic recovery, political reforms and long-term national stability.
