Aaron Ramsey, former Arsenal and Wales midfielder, has officially retired from professional football.
Aaron Ramsey, the former captain of the Wales national football team and a widely admired midfielder at club level, has officially retired from professional football at the age of 35. The announcement brings to a close a two-decade journey in the sport marked by standout moments and significant silverware.
Ramsey confirmed his decision to step away from the game with a heartfelt message on social media, expressing gratitude to teammates, coaches, family, and supporters who had backed him throughout his career. His announcement follows a period out of club football after his contract with Mexican side Pumas UNAM was terminated late last year.
Born in Caerphilly, Wales, Ramsey began his professional career at Cardiff City, his boyhood club, making his first-team debut in 2006. His early promise quickly attracted attention from clubs across England.
In 2008, Ramsey signed for Arsenal in the English Premier League, where he would spend the most defining years of his career. Over 11 seasons at Arsenal, he made more than 260 Premier League appearances, becoming a midfield linchpin under multiple managers.
His time at Arsenal was highlighted by key contributions in cup competitions, notably scoring the winning goals in the 2014 and 2017 FA Cup finals, moments that etched his name into club lore. During his spell in North London, Ramsey helped Arsenal secure three FA Cup titles.
Despite enduring a serious leg break in 2010 that threatened to derail his progress, Ramsey battled back to full fitness and was a core performer for Arsenal throughout the 2010s, admired for his engine, timing, and ability to arrive late in the box.
In 2019, Ramsey moved to Juventus in Italy’s Serie A, winning the league title in his first season, as well as the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana during his time with the Turin club.
While at Juventus, Ramsey also spent a short loan spell with Rangers in Scotland and later joined OGC Nice in France. He returned to Cardiff City in 2023, where he also briefly served as caretaker manager before departing in 2025.
Ramsey’s final professional stint was with Pumas UNAM in Mexico, but his time in Liga MX was overshadowed by injuries that limited him to only a handful of appearances, contributing to his decision to retire.
On the international stage, Ramsey earned 86 caps for Wales between 2008 and 2024, scoring 21 goals and captaining his country with distinction. He was central to Wales’ semifinal run at UEFA Euro 2016, one of the nation’s greatest achievements in its footballing history.
He also featured in Wales’ campaigns at Euro 2020 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup, helping the Dragons qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1958, a milestone he described as a “dream come true.”
Ramsey’s career was not without its challenges. Repeated injuries, particularly in later years, curtailed his consistency and availability, yet he remained a respected figure for resilience and professionalism.
The announcement of his retirement has drawn tributes from fans and former teammates. Many highlighted his influence both on and off the pitch, particularly his clutch performances in cup finals and leadership for Wales.
As Ramsey transitions away from playing, speculation has grown about his future in coaching or punditry, with many expecting him to remain in the sport through mentorship or media roles. For now, he will be remembered as one of the standout Welsh footballers of his generation.
