In observance of World Sight Day, the Ministry of Health has pledged to significantly boost the availability of eye care and reinforce the country's health infrastructure.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, in his message to mark World Sight Day, stressed that the ministry will work closely with the Council of Governors, county governments, development partners, and communities to embed eye care firmly within the framework of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
CS Duale highlighted the critical importance of early detection, noting that an estimated 85 percent of all cases of vision loss in the country are either preventable or treatable.
He emphasized that timely screening is the strategy needed to reduce these alarming statistics.
The CS stated that with sustained collaboration and investment, every Kenyan adult or child, rural or urban, will enjoy the right to clear sight and the opportunities it unlocks.
He noted that globally, 1.1 billion people have visual disabilities and impairments, with nearly 90 percent of the cases being preventable or treatable.
World Sight Day is held annually on the second Thursday of October to raise awareness about visual disabilities and underscore the importance of eye health. The global observance is coordinated by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) and supported by organizations and governments across the globe.
