The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued an alert warning of heavy rainfall and strong winds expected along the Coast from Monday as residual Cyclone Chenge weakens over the southwest Indian Ocean. The system, which developed near Madagascar, is moving westward across the northern Mozambique Channel at approximately 11 kilometres per hour and is expected to dissipate near the Kenya–Tanzania coast by Tuesday.

Meteorologists have reported that Cyclone Chenge currently has maximum sustained winds of about 55 kilometres per hour, with gusts reaching up to 75 kilometres per hour. The central pressure of the storm stands at around 1000 hPa, indicating a weakening tropical depression. Despite its gradual decline in intensity, the system is projected to influence local weather patterns along the Kenyan coastline.

Coastal counties including Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Tana River, and Lamu are expected to experience heavy downpours and gusty winds exceeding 25 knots. The weatherman has cautioned that the rains may cause flooding in low-lying areas and disrupt transport and power supply. Residents in these regions have been urged to prepare for possible impacts and remain vigilant as the situation develops.

Marine activities are also expected to be affected by rough sea conditions brought on by the system. The Meteorological Department has warned fishermen and marine operators to avoid venturing into the open sea between Monday and Tuesday due to unsafe wave patterns and strong gusts. Coastal authorities have been advised to issue local safety notices and support awareness efforts among fishing communities.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has assured the public that it is closely monitoring the weakening system and will issue timely updates. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and heed all advisories to minimize the risk of accidents or damage as Cyclone Chenge continues to weaken over the southwest Indian Ocean.
