Vietnam proposed world largest stadium 🏟️

Vietnam has officially begun construction of the Trong Dong Stadium, a massive sports arena expected to become the largest stadium in the world once completed.

The stadium, being built in Hanoi, will have a planned capacity of 135,000 spectators, surpassing the current world’s largest venue, the Rungrado 1st of May Stadium in Pyongyang.

Groundbreaking for the mega project took place in December 2025, marking the start of one of the most ambitious sports infrastructure developments in Southeast Asia.

The project is being developed by Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup and forms part of a wider sports and urban development initiative designed to modernise the capital’s sporting facilities.

Once completed, the stadium will occupy about 73 hectares, making it one of the largest sports complexes in Asia and capable of hosting major international sporting events.

The design of the arena is inspired by the ancient Dong Son bronze drum, a historic cultural symbol in Vietnam, with architectural elements reflecting traditional Vietnamese heritage.

Plans for the venue include a retractable roof, modern spectator facilities and advanced technology that will allow the stadium to host football matches, athletics events and large concerts.

The stadium is expected to be the centrepiece of a broader Olympic-style sports city project planned around Hanoi, which will include training grounds, residential developments and transport infrastructure.

Construction is expected to continue over the next several years, with planners targeting completion by 2028, a move expected to strengthen Vietnam’s ambitions to host major global sporting events.
