Detained Venezuela president Nicolas Maduro

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has been detained in the United States after being seized by U.S. special forces during a military operation in Caracas, according to U.S. officials and international media reports. The operation was carried out in the early hours, with explosions and heavy military movement reported in parts of the capital.

Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were flown out of Venezuela aboard U.S. military aircraft and taken to New York, where the president was placed in federal custody. He is expected to face long-standing charges in a U.S. court, including allegations related to drug trafficking and narco-terrorism conspiracy.

U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed the operation, saying Maduro was now in custody and would face justice under U.S. law. Trump described the action as necessary to protect U.S. interests and address what he termed criminal activities linked to the Venezuelan leadership.

In remarks that drew swift global reaction, Trump said the United States would temporarily run Venezuela until a safe and orderly political transition could be achieved. He suggested Washington would oversee key state functions during the interim period.

Several countries, including Russia and China, strongly condemned the operation, warning that it violated Venezuela’s sovereignty and international law. Venezuelan officials loyal to Maduro also denounced the move and called for his immediate release.

The United Nations Security Council is expected to discuss the developments amid fears of rising regional tensions. The situation inside Venezuela remains uncertain as international pressure mounts and legal proceedings against Maduro begin in the United States.
