UON Students clash with police outside the school
Students from the University of Nairobi on Wednesday clashed with police along University Way during demonstrations demanding the release of their exam results. The protests, which began within the main campus, spilled onto the busy road, causing major traffic disruptions as riot police attempted to disperse the crowds.
The students accused the university administration of negligence, claiming that their academic progress has been stalled for months due to delays in releasing results from recent examinations. Some protesters carried placards calling for transparency and accountability, while others accused university officials of failing to address their concerns despite repeated petitions.
Police officers were forced to use tear gas to disperse the demonstrators after they blocked sections of the road and engaged in running battles with law enforcement. Several students were arrested in the confrontation, though the exact number of casualties or injuries remains unclear.
University officials have yet to issue a formal statement, but sources indicate that internal administrative challenges and disputes with lecturers over pending payments may have contributed to the delay. The unrest comes at a time when universities across the country are grappling with financial and governance issues that have repeatedly disrupted academic calendars.
