People’s Renaissance Movement (PRM) parliamentary candidate Timothy Kamau Kariuki attracted attention during the Ol Kalou by-election after arriving at Kieni Primary School polling station in Nyandarua County on a donkey to cast his vote.
Kariuki, who had used the donkey during his campaign trail, said the unusual mode of transport represented his connection with ordinary residents and highlighted the challenges faced by many people in accessing basic needs.
The candidate’s arrival drew the attention of voters, journalists and election observers at the polling station as he dismounted before joining other voters to participate in the electoral process.
Kariuki had adopted the donkey as a campaign symbol throughout the election period, using it to move around different parts of Ol Kalou Constituency while seeking support from residents.
The PRM candidate said his campaign approach was aimed at showing humility and identifying with citizens who rely on affordable means of transport in their daily lives.
The Ol Kalou parliamentary seat became vacant following the death of former MP David Njuguna Kiaraho in March 2026, leading to the by-election.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) conducted the mini-poll across polling stations in the constituency, with thousands of registered voters participating.
The contest attracted several candidates seeking to replace Kiaraho, with political parties and independent contenders campaigning for the seat.
Security officers were deployed across polling centres as voting proceeded peacefully, with authorities urging residents to maintain calm throughout the exercise.
Kariuki’s donkey arrival became one of the notable moments of the by-election, drawing public interest during the voting exercise.
