According to reports in Spain, a delegation from France Football, the award’s organizers, traveled to Madrid in recent days in an effort to mend ties with the club. However, discussions reportedly ended without success, leaving relations between the two sides strained ahead of this year’s ceremony.
The tension stems from last year’s Ballon d’Or, when Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior, widely tipped as the frontrunner, was controversially overlooked in favor of Manchester City midfielder Rodri. The outcome sparked outrage at the Santiago Bernabéu, with the Spanish giants accusing the organizers of showing bias and disrespect. In protest, Real Madrid boycotted the event entirely, refusing to attend or collect awards, including those for best club and best coach.
Marca and other outlets report that despite the latest diplomatic effort, Real Madrid’s stance remains firm. The club is said to feel “disrespected” by the organizers and skeptical about the credibility of the award. The club’s leadership is reportedly considering its options, with a repeat of last year’s no-show seen as a strong possibility if no significant changes are made in the process or recognition of their players’ achievements.
