Speaker Calls For A gender-responsive Budget That Includes PWDs
By Anne Kangero (KNA)
Machakos County Assembly speaker Anna Kiusya has advocated for a gender-responsive county budget that prioritizes marginalized groups, including women, youth, and people with disabilities. She made this statement during a recent assembly meeting.
Kiusya, the only female county assembly speaker in Kenya, emphasized the importance of empowering women through various initiatives, such as table banking and merry-go-rounds.
She also stressed the need to address the challenges faced by the boy child and prevent them from engaging in substance abuse.
Kiusya assured the house that the budget has programmes for these groups. She said, "We as women must advocate for the marginalized in the county by ensuring the budget has programmes to assist the unemployed youth, empowering women and persons with disabilities."
Kiusya, who happens to be the only female County assembly speaker in the country, said she will empower women who are doing table banking, and rounds so that they do it on a bigger scale to improve their lives and their families.
She added that they will also look into the boy child so that they are not left behind because of the importance of gender inclusivity, and to help them not engage in drugs and alcohol but keep themselves busy in development groups.
