The ousted ODM Secretary General Hon. Edwin Sifuna

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has insisted that he remains the duly elected Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), dismissing a decision by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to remove him from office.

Addressing the media in Nairobi on Thursday, Sifuna termed the NEC’s resolution illegal, unprocedural and in direct violation of the ODM constitution. He maintained that the process leading to his ouster did not follow the party’s established disciplinary framework.

The senator argued that he was neither formally notified of any disciplinary charges nor granted an opportunity to defend himself before the decision was made. He described the move as a breach of internal party democracy.

Sifuna emphasized that his election as Secretary General was conducted lawfully and can only be overturned through a constitutionally sanctioned process. He said any attempt to remove him outside those provisions is null and void.

He reaffirmed his commitment to ODM’s founding ideals, stating that his political stance remains anchored in the pursuit of fairness, justice and democratic governance within both the party and the country.

The Nairobi lawmaker linked the leadership wrangles to broader ideological differences within the party, particularly regarding its political direction and engagement with the current administration.

Sifuna maintained that defending internal democracy within ODM is critical to safeguarding its credibility as a national political movement. He urged party members to remain steadfast and resist actions that undermine constitutional order.

He further indicated that he is prepared to pursue all available legal and institutional avenues to challenge the NEC’s decision. According to him, the matter transcends an individual position and touches on the integrity of party structures.

The senator dismissed claims of indiscipline that reportedly informed the NEC’s resolution, asserting that no formal findings or documented proceedings had been presented to justify such accusations.

Sifuna also called for calm among ODM supporters, urging them to uphold unity even as the dispute unfolds. He said internal disagreements should be resolved within the framework of the party constitution.

The NEC met in Mombasa on Wednesday and resolved to relieve Sifuna of his duties, subsequently appointing an acting Secretary General. However, Sifuna has rejected the validity of that appointment.

The unfolding standoff sets the stage for a protracted internal contest within ODM, with Sifuna signaling that he will not step aside and remains firmly in office pending a lawful and transparent resolution.
