President William Ruto has challenged critics to offer alternative ideas instead of engaging in what he termed noise and activism, urging Kenyans to embrace patriotism as the country pursues reforms in the capital.

Speaking at State House, Nairobi, the Head of State said progress would not be achieved through name-calling or negativity. “Any person who has better ideas should come forward. Noise, name calling, drama and activism will not change our country. We must be patriotic. If you hate your country how is that a solution? If you’re negative about your country don’t look for anybody to blame, go to the mirror, that is the person to blame,” he said.

The President revealed that the government is designing a modern national market in Gikomba, pledging a Sh5 billion investment to transform the trading hub into a world-class facility.

“I was in Gikomba and we are now designing a modern national market. I have given my undertaking that we are going to build a 5-billion-shilling modern market in Gikomba,” Ruto announced.

He said the project is part of a broader plan to strengthen Nairobi’s stature as a regional and global capital, noting that the redevelopment will enhance order, functionality and competitiveness in the city’s commercial ecosystem.

“This will strengthen Nairobi’s standing as a capital worthy of the republic it serves; orderly, functional, competitive and globally respected,” he added.

On security, Ruto declared that safety remains a top priority for the capital, directing the Interior Ministry to craft a new policing framework tailored for the metropolitan area.

“Security is non-negotiable, especially for a modern capital city like Nairobi. I therefore direct the CS for Interior to prepare and present, within 60 days, a framework for a dedicated Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit to work hand in hand with the Nairobi County security,” he said.

The President emphasized that the proposed unit would be instrumental in protecting residents, investors and visitors, positioning Nairobi as a secure destination for business and tourism.

“We must make Nairobi safe for citizens, visitors, investors and business alike,” he stated.

Ruto further announced plans for major infrastructure expansion, disclosing that construction of a new airport in Nairobi will commence in the coming months as part of efforts to modernize the city.

“We must modernize this city. In a couple of months, we will roll out the construction of a new airport in Nairobi. We must raise our ambition; we can’t continue to make peace with mediocrity, it is unacceptable,” the President said.
